The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino opened in 1973 with 2,100 hotel rooms, making it one of the largest hotels in the world at that time. Tragedy struck in 1980 when the hotel became the site of one of the worst high-rise fires to ever happen, claiming the lives of 85 victims. The hotel was rebuilt at a cost of $50 million and reopened in 1981. In 1986, the resort was sold to Bally Manufacturing and was renamed Bally’s. The resort was the longtime home of the theatrical production Jubilee! which ran from 1981 through 2016. Bally’s still sits on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road and was renamed Horseshoe Las Vegas in December 2022. Hold on to a piece of gaming history with this vintage 1986 Bally's Casino $5 chip.
