The Riviera Hotel and Casino, known to longtime Las Vegans as “the Riv,” was a Mediterranean themed resort and premier destination. First imagined as the Casa Blanca by Detroit Mobster William “Lefty Clark” Bischoff, the property fell into new ownership when the Nevada Gaming Control Board learned of Bischoff’s crime connected identity. Upon Bischoff’s ousting, investor and Detroit Purple Gang associate Samuel “Sammy Purple” Cohen was licensed and given the reigns, thus The Riviera Hotel & Casino opened in April of 1955 as the first high-rise hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

Throughout its history, the property fell into the hands of several mob affiliates until 1968 when it was purchased by well-known and legitimate community bankers Parry Thomas and Jerome Mack.

The Riviera had a colorful 60-year run until May 4, 2015 when the iconic 2,100-room hotel closed permanently. The Riviera was imploded in 2016 to make way for the new West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Own an everlasting piece of The Strip’s first high-rise from a historic era with this collectable poker chip.
