Opening December 26, 1946, the Flamingo Las Vegas was the third resort to open on the Strip and is the oldest casino still active on the Strip. Conceptualized by Billy Wilkerson, the Flamingo has become synonymous with mob associate Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, as he invested in the resort prior to its completion and managed the property through its opening and until his death in June of 1947. Though the resort had a strong opening, things quickly soured for Siegel as the casino lost upwards of $500,000 in the first several days of operation. But the Flamingo thrived after Siegel’s demise and remains a recognizable landmark in Las Vegas. Since the 1940s the Flamingo has been purchased by the likes of Kirk Kerkorian and Caesars Entertainment, which owns the property today.
